An Indonesian national of Indian descent, Anand Krishna is acclaimed as a “phenomenon” by both his critics and sympathizers. His critics might wonder, “What makes him popular? There is nothing extraordinary about him.” His sympathizers appreciate his passion for promoting peace among different groups in the society and acclaim: “He comes from The Source of All Wisdom.”
Born in Solo, Central Java, on the 1st of September 1956, Anand had his early education in Lucknow, North India, where he met his first spiritual mentor, Sheikh Baba. A simple ice vendor, the saint was not known beyond the area where he lived in, but played major role in the “making” of Anand Krishna who was already familiar with Sufi poetry and the teachings of Shah Abdul Latief of Sindh, through his father, Tolaram.
Working while studying, Anand Krishna earned his Master’s degree from a reputed university and was at the top of his career as Director and Shareholder of a Garment Factory in Indonesia when he fell ill. Medical diagnosis disclosed Leukemia in a critical stage. Thus, in 1991, at 35 years old, Anand was faced with a certain death.
After months of suffering, a mysterious meeting with a Tibetan Lama in the Himalayas, and a miraculous recovery from his illness, Anand decided to devote his life to share his joy, peace, love and for healing.
In the last 17 years, Anand has spoken to millions through television shows, radio talks, in-house trainings, books, newspaper interviews and articles, as well as daily meetings and workshops. The activities take place at Anand Ashram (affiliated with United Nations), One Earth Retreat Center, Anand Krishna Center and Graha Indonesia. These are the four centers of meditation established by him in the Indonesian Capital of Jakarta, the suburban city of Bogor, the palatial ancient city of Yogyakarta, and the beautiful island of Bali.
He has also inspired several popular movements, and Centers for Self Development, among others:
- The National Integration Movement, with almost 30 branches all over Indonesia and overseas representation, including one in the Middle East.
- Forum Kebangkitan Jiwa (Forum for Revival of Human Spirit) – which has given free Self Development Programs to more than 25,000 teachers within last 4 years.
- Anand Krishna Centres in many major cities, and L’Ayurveda Healing Centers in Jakarta and Bali.
- AK Global Co-Operation, a national co-operative society with branches in several cities.
- California Bali Friendship Association
- Secret Garden of The Mother Divine, Dedicated to Healing Mother Earth and All Her Children, located in Kuta (Bali)
- AK Education Foundation, First Interfaith School in Bali, for which land has been acquired (about 2,500 sq meters in the prime area of Kuta)
Anand has appeared in all major National Media, several Regional Media – both in print and electronic. He has a weekly column in one of the Major Print Media, and monthly TV shows as well as Radio Shows – both on the island of Bali. He also writes regularly for several other Media nationwide.
In Jakarta, he has just completed a 13-episode serial on “Q” and “Swara” TV Channels, entitled “Building Indonesia Anew with Anand Krishna”. Currently, the next season of the show is already on air, which is titled “Building The World Anew with Anand Krishna”.
Among other prominent members of the Indonesian Society, those who have appeared so far in these shows are the 4th President of Indonesia, HE Abdurrachman Wahid; the Special Police Commissioner in charge of Bureau of Narcotics, Mr. Mangku Pastika who became famous in the case of Bali Bombing; the Sultan of Yogyakarta; HE Ambassador of Australia for Indonesia; Several MPs, Artists, etcetera.
However, his most outstanding contribution and legacy are his 150 over books published within the last 10 years with more than half a million copies sold all over Indonesia.
One of his recent books, in fact one of the three titles in English, “Voice of Indonesia” was released in California and discussed by the Campus Radio of University of California in Santa Barbara.

My dear friends the world over… You may remember back in the year 2010 i was falsely accused of sexual harassment, which started with a black campaign in the media.
In the Closed Court sessions more than 80, even 90 percent of the questions asked by the prosecutor and judges were not related to the charges but to my thoughts, works, books, etc.
We could prove in the court of law that the sole accuser was still virgin, as shown in her medical report from the government hospital, and that there were no signs of volence. Inspite of that, without hearing me, and without giving me the chance to produce my witnesses, i was detained – and i went on hunger strike against the injustice, which lasted for 49 days.
In the meantime, our friends found out the indecent illicit affair of the presiding judge Hari Sasangka with one of the witnesses, the photographs were submitted to the Supreme Court, which intervened and changed the entire panel of the judges. This time the sessions were presided by the MOST CLEAN AND REPUTED WOMAN JUDGE ALBERTINA HO.
She recalled all key witnesses, and finally after more than 15 months of trial, she ACQUITTED ME of al charges, on November 22nd last year.
NOW, ALL LEGAL SYSTEMS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD DOES NOT PERMIT THE PROSECUTOR TO APPEAL AGAINST ACQUITTAL. But, in this case, the prosecutor appealed, and now the 3 Supreme Court Judges presiding over my case, has overturned the acquittal and sentenced me to 2,5 years imprisonment.
This is ENTIRELY UNCONSTITUTIONAL, and is gross violation of human rights..
I NEED YOU ACTIVE SUPPORT AND HELP… This is not about my case alone, but about injustice. THIS IS ABOUT A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO DO NOT APPROVE OF MY INTERFAITH ACTIVISM and PLURALISTIC VIEWS. These are the people who are identified in the Court of Law, yet they can do anything to prosecute and innocent.
